how does world cup bracket work

How Does the World Cup 2026 Bracket Work?

If you’re new to the World Cup format — or if the 2026 changes have left you confused — here’s a straightforward explanation of how the bracket works.

Step 1: Group stage produces 32 qualifiers

Twelve groups of four teams play a round-robin. The top two from each group (24 teams) qualify automatically. Then the twelve third-placed teams are ranked — the best eight also qualify. That gives you 32 teams for the knockout stage.

Step 2: The Round of 32 bracket is pre-drawn

Before the tournament starts, FIFA announces which groups feed into which bracket slots. The bracket is divided into two halves, and within each half, group winners are matched against runners-up from different groups. The eight qualifying third-placed teams are also assigned to specific slots.

This is why finishing first rather than second in your group matters — it determines your Round of 32 opponent, which in turn shapes your entire potential path.

Step 3: Single elimination from the Round of 32

Every knockout match is win-or-go-home. If scores are level after 90 minutes, 30 minutes of extra time are played. If still level, penalty shootouts decide.

The bracket progresses: 32 → 16 → 8 → 4 → 2 → 1 champion

Step 4: Third-place play-off

The two semi-final losers play a consolation match the day before the Final for the bronze medal position.

Step 5: The Final

The last two teams standing meet at MetLife Stadium in New York/New Jersey.
